“How’d it go with Mrs McGowan?” says Sam, when Jennie walks in the door later that afternoon.

“Well, she wouldn’t let me any further than the kitchen and kept her eyes on me the whole time like she was expecting me to try for the cutlery.”

“Bloody hell. How much did you get?”

“Half a dozen knives and a couple of spoons.” Jennie’s tone and eyebrows are a perfect Groucho Marx.

“Laaaaammmme,” sings Sam.

“A hundred dollars.” Jennie hands over a wad of fives that smell strongly of mothballs. The girls have set up a Doggs’ Toggs account and bank all the money so they won’t be tempted to spend it. Not that they could, with Mrs Farquhar having double knotted the purse strings.

“I managed to get a Star Wars book too,” says Jennie, handing it to Sam.

“Fantastic. I’m thinking Storm Troopers for Mrs McGowan’s lot.”

“Princess Leia for Sapphire is a must.”

“I wouldn’t be brave enough to suggest anything else. I can get a pair of those doughnut things you use for putting your hair up in a bun and stick them on either side of her head.”

They’re flipping through the book assigning characters to the various dogs when the phone rings. “You’d better get that.” Sam hasn’t answered the phone since the night of Sapphire’s birthday party and leaves it ringing when at home on her own.

“Hello,” says Jennie.

Sam waits with breath held, absurdly hoping it’s Chris.

“No, she’s out, can I take a message.” Jennie looks at her but taking in the optimism on Sam’s face, she shakes her head.
